If so, then the Project Engineer position with VDL Steelweld, USA headquarters in Troy, Michigan may be something for you. Our project engineers are responsible for the realization and oversight of technically complex projects. They oversee various aspects of workflow and assist project management with, budget allocation as well as scheduling for assigned projects.

A closer look at WHAT IT TAKES

Our project engineer has the opportunity and responsibility to coordinate and manage the complete technical aspects of engineering projects. Specifically overseeing the overall process as well as the more detailed aspects within the assigned project for the VDL Steelweld offices throughout the United States and reports to the General Manager of VDL Steelweld USA, headquartered in Troy, Michigan. The Project Engineer of the US works in close contact with VDL Steelweld headquartered in the Netherlands regarding global sourcing and project execution.

Duties Include:

  • Responsibility for the technical process including risk analyses, FMEA and cycle time calculations.
  • Supervising, coordinating work by the project employees, suppliers and contractors. 
  • Collaborating with project management and staff to create a strategic action plan and cost estimates of materials, time, labor, and other resources required to complete the project.
  • Facilitating and contributing to the development of project plans and designs.
  • Recommending and/or analyzing materials, equipment, and practices used in the project.
  • Assessing the competence, capabilities, resources, and financial status of vendors.
  • Supervising progress of the assigned project.
  • Comparing the actual cost of development project to estimates.
  • Collaborating with design group to change plans if problems arise.
  • Preparing periodic progress and cost reports for leadership.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulations, codes, guidelines, best practices, and policies.
  • Collaborating with the operations department to identify and troubleshoot problems.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned. 
  • Willing to travel and work on location.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D Design software as Autocad and Catia.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Basic understanding of ISO 9000 design requirements.

Do you have the EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE?

  • Bachelor’s degree in related engineering discipline required.  
  • At least three to five years of experience in project engineering, systems design, operations, or other related field, with at least three years of management experience leading multidisciplinary design teams required.
